  1. A white blood cell. Leucocytes are part of
  2. the body's defences and give immunity against
  3. disease. There are several different types.
  4. Some (phagocytes and macrophages) engulf
  5. invading microorganisms, others kill infected
  6. cells, while lymphocytes produce more
  7. specific immune responses. Human blood
  8. contains about 11,000 leucocytes to the cubic
  9. millimetre - about one to every 500 red
  10. cells. Leucocyte numbers may be reduced
  11. (leucopenia) by starvation, pernicious
  12. anaemia, and certain infections, such as
  13. typhoid and malaria. An increase in the
  14. numbers (leucocytosis) is a reaction to
  15. normal events such as digestion, exertion,
  16. and pregnancy, and to abnormal ones such as
  17. loss of blood, cancer, and most infections.
